Terra del Sole boasts a Renaissance historic center that takes its name from the sun: a fortified "ideal city". Terra del Sole or "Eliopoli" (City of the Sun) is an admirable example of the new urban model that was imposed in Italy in the 1500s, due to the influence of the theories and experiences of military engineers.
Conceived as a "city-fortress", and not as a simple fortress, this splendid Renaissance citadel pleasantly surprises the visitor every time of the year. Built by the will of Cosimo I De 'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, it is one of the few urban centers to boast a precise date of foundation: 8 December 1564.

Built to guard the border with the Papal State, it preserves the charm of the city-fortress intact, surrounded by walls 13 meters high that develop on a rectangular plan for more than 2 kilometers, surmounted by two castles, that of the Captain of the Artillery in defense of the Florentine village and that of the Governor, in defense of the Roman village.

An example of Renaissance architecture, the central Piazza d'Armi, also known as Piazza Maggiore, is the true "urban navel" according to the scheme of the "city on a human scale" traced by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The two most important city buildings overlook it: the Church of Santa Reparata and, opposite, the Palazzo dei Commissari or Palazzo Pretorio, as if to underline the two powers that preside over the orderly civil life.
