The unanswered questions surrounding murder, suicide or a failed escape attempt by an incapacitated person may have contributed to the myth living: every year around the anniversary of the death (June 13) of the regent King Ludwig II, a solemn memorial mass is held at the votive chapel in Berg Castle Park instead of. Numerous festively dressed royal loyalists with magnificent flag delegations pause here in silent remembrance. Below the votive chapel, a simple wooden cross on the shallow shore of Lake Starnberg still marks the spot where King Ludwig II was found lifeless on June 13, 1886 after a walk with Prof. von Gudden. His beloved great cousin, Empress Elisabeth, was staying in Feldafing opposite at that time.
