At 68 km, the Schwentine is one of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein. It rises 1.7 km southwest of the highest point of the state, the Bungsberg, on a spring meadow northeast of the village of Bergfeld (Kasseedorf) and flows through the whole of Holstein Switzerland with numerous large lakes. The river flows through the places Eutin, Bad Malente, Plön, Preetz, Schwentinental (Raisdorf and Klausdorf) and flows into the Kiel Fjord in Kiel between the districts of Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf and Wellingdorf.
