The name of the island of Viðoy means "wooden island" because large quantities of driftwood are found in Viðvík Bay on the east coast, which was once an important source of timber for the treeless Faroe Islands.

From Viðareiði, we have an impressive view to the west of the northern peaks of Borðoy and Kunoy. To the east, in good weather, the island of Fugloy can be seen across the isthmus.

The present church of Viðareiði was built in 1892 after the old church was destroyed by a storm in the 17th century. It is said that part of the cemetery was washed away by the sea, and coffins had to be recovered in Hvannasund and reburied in Viðareiði.
