The place was first mentioned in 1243 in a contract between the Würzburg bishop Hermann I von Lobdeburg and Countess Adelheid von Rieneck. Local tradition goes from a fishing settlement that was the origin of the later city. In 1317, Count Ludwig von Rieneck († 1333) received from Bishop Gottfried III. from Hohenlohe the town and Gemünden Castle.[7] Gemünden was the seat of the Gemünden office. From 1469, Gemünden finally belonged to the Bishopric of Würzburg. From 1500 the Würzburg Bishopric was part of the Franconian Imperial Circle. Prince-Bishop Rudolf II von Scherenberg built it as a bastion against the neighboring territories of Kurmainz and Fulda Monastery. In 1641, Jean Baptiste Budes de Guébriant's army was stationed near Gemünden, some of which had plundered and robbed right up to the gates of Würzburg.[8] As a result of the Imperial Deputation Main Conclusion in 1803, the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg was annexed by Bavaria. Gemünden became a Bavarian district town.

The local Schönau monastery was founded in 1189 by Philipp von Thüngen. A Minorite monastery since 1699, the monks primarily look after the monastery and pilgrimage church.

As part of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818.

In my opinion, one of the most bicycle-unfriendly cities on the Main is Gemünden.

If you come on the Mainradweg from Karlstadt, you have to go through the railway underpass and you are in front of the very busy B 26. You have to cross this using a traffic light. There is almost no installation space on either side of the street. If several cyclists want to cross the street, you can save yourself in the underpass on one side. On the city side, however, there is immediately a crowd grid. This is long and narrow. Driving through is really fun with a trailer. The pedestrian zone begins immediately, where cycling is prohibited with a corresponding traffic sign. After a few meters, the road leads to Obertorstraße, where cycling is permitted again and even cars drive around. But you can't see this, because the corresponding signs are only at the other end of the street. Then there is the “wonderful” cobblestones. If you decide to drive instead of pushing, you almost get a tangled bowel.

To continue on the Main Cycle Path, you have to cross the Saale Bridge at the fish market. There is no bike path here either. Would be very desirable in the dense traffic.

Another point is the journey to the train station. You can use the sidewalk up to the level of the Nettomarkt. Then it is forbidden to continue driving. In addition to the heavily frequented exit and entrance to the Nettomarkt, there is also a road junction and the busy main road. Here you have to take the main road to get to the train station on the other side of the road, which is within sight.

A well thought-out cycle path concept looks different. In particular, because the very busy Mainradweg leads right through Gemünden.
