The Zuursche dunes consist of heathland with fens, drifting sand and some coniferous forest. The Natuurmonumenten Association owns most of the Zuursche dunes and manages the nature reserve as part of the Norger esdorpen landscape reserve.

Due to reclamation and overgrazing in this area, sand drifts threatened to counter this, forests with Scots pine were planted on the western and northern sides of Steenbergen. In the Zuursche Duinen you can see the result of the sand drifts, the sand dunes.
