Herentals arose from two centres: in the north a trading settlement (burgesia) on the Kleine Nete, and in the south an agricultural settlement (villa) around St. Waldetrudis Church. In 1209, Henry I, Duke of Brabant, granted freedom rights to Herentals. The merchant citizens thus obtained complete personal freedom from the feudal authority of the chapter of Mons, which controlled the region as lord. Urbanization was a gradual process: it was not until the second half of the 15th century that Herentals had grown into a fully-fledged small town in Brabant. In the Margraviate of Antwerp, only Lier had the same status.
