The Theresienmonument, the most important monument in the city of Bad Aibling, was unveiled on June 1, 1835. It was built in memory of Prince Otto's farewell from his mother, Queen Therese of Bavaria. The great European powers had agreed on Otto, the second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, born on June 1, 1815, when Greece, which had become independent of the Ottoman Empire after an uprising, was to have its own king. Ludwig I was a great admirer of Greek culture and was happy to see his son take over Greece. On December 6, 1832 the then minor Prince Otto said goodbye to the city of Munich, his father accompanied him to Ottobrunn, the mother with his sister Mathilde to the Aibling market, the older brother Maximilian, who later became King Max I, to over the national border.
