The enchanting Meerfelder Maar lies in the middle of the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel. This maar is at least 30,000 years old and takes up about half the space of the maar funnel. The idyllic village of Meerfeld nestles against the steep southern slopes of the other half.

Hiking

Bathing in the 80,000-year-old pool (of the Meerfeld Maare), surrounded by the forest that grows on the crater slope, is a special experience. Even more crazy is the idea that you are actually swimming in a volcano and that there is a powerful lava bubble underneath, which raises the region by 1 - 2 mm every year. This thrill of swimming does not always and everywhere exist! For me a highlight of our Eifel hike and absolutely recommendable. €2 entry for the small, cozy outdoor pool with no frills.
