Hydraulic ram, an ingenious water pump powered by hydroelectric power. Unfortunately, this particular one is not operational.
The beating noise of the valves is typical.
A working copy can still be found at the Oybach.

Hiking
A hydraulic ram, ram, dynamic pressure water ram, or water ram is a water-driven, intermittently operating pump. The ram uses the pressure surge or ram effect to lift some of the water that drives the pump to a higher level. It is particularly suitable for pumping tasks in the vicinity of watercourses with a gradient that is sufficient for operation.
