Two Centuries of War MemoriesThe memorial, located in a beech forest near Baumburg Abbey, has its origins in the Napoleonic Wars. After the Battle of Hohenlinden (1800), the nearby Baumburg monastery served as a military hospital for those involved in the war. After a typhus epidemic broke out there, Bavarian, Austrian and French soldiers were buried in a mass grave in the Buchenwald. Today there are memorials to various wars on the site. In 1849, a memorial chapel was erected on a hillside above the mass grave, and two memorial stones commemorate those who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.Source and more info
