In Lake Wolfgangsee, not far from Falkenstein near St. Gilgen, lies a small island with an old cross – the so-called Oxen Cross. According to legend, a farmer was once leading his ox along the lakeshore when boulders suddenly fell. The animal was frightened and fell into the water. Although the farmer couldn't swim, he jumped after it to save his ox. A wayside shrine was erected on the island to commemorate this event.
