The Donauuferbahn was built in 1909. In their construction, emphasis was placed on landscape conservation and brought in for this purpose, the painter and monument keeper Rudolf Matthias Pichler. Protected above all is the 34-kilometer route between Krems and Emmersdorf, which is part of the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Wachau.

Dürnstein is a town of 879 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2017) in the district Krems-Land in Lower Austria.
In combination with the scenic and architectural beauty of the Wachau, the place has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in Austria.
Dürnstein is located on the Danube in the Wachau, which separates the Waldviertel from the Dunkelsteinerwald. The area of the municipality covers 16.81 square kilometers. 59.61 percent of the area is wooded.
