Tips

  • The Basilica was built in the 19th century and is dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga, the patron saint of Asturias. The construction of the Basilica is largely due to King Alfonso XIII, who wanted to honor the memory of his ancestor, King Pelayo, who led the Asturian resistance against the Muslim invasion in the 8th century and whose victory in the Battle of Covadonga is considered the beginning of the Reconquest. The Basilica is a neo-Romanesque building with an impressive façade and a bell tower that rises more than 50 meters high. Inside, an image of the Virgin of Covadonga stands out, which is located on a high marble altar.

  • On the esplanade of the basilica are noteworthy:

    => the Campanona, bell three meters high and weighing 4,000 kilos built in 1900 in La Felguera, donated by the Italian Count Sizzo-Norris and Luis Gómez Herrero;
    => the bronze statue of Pelayo from 1964, by the sculptor Gerardo Zaragoza;
    => the obelisk with the Victoria Cross is from 1857, erected by the Dukes of Montpensier; tradition says it was the place where Don Pelayo was crowned king;
    => the Monastery of San Pedro, is a historical artistic monument. It is believed to have been founded by Alfonso I, but it was reformed at various times. From the Romanesque period, it preserves part of its walls and its three stepped and semicircular apses. In the seventeenth century, the new rectangular cloister was built with two levels, the lower with semicircular arches and the upper with carpanel arches. In 1687, the monastery was renovated and given its baroque facade, topped by a pediment. In the XVIII another reform, endows the building with a single nave and wooden roof.
