The title of Santa Maria di Pozzo Faceto or Beata Vergine del Pozzo indicates an ancient image of Mary who is invoked as the protector of Fasano (together with St. John the Baptist).
It is so called because the "sacred image" was found during the renovation work on a well: some workers, during the excavation, came across a kind of cave with an image of the Madonna as a background. Having removed the boulder, they brought it to the surface and kept it by building a chapel in that same place, the original nucleus of which dates back to the 11th-12th centuries. The icon is still visible today on the main altar of the sanctuary; the well where the discovery took place also currently exists and is visible inside the sanctuary, near the entrance.
The inhabitants of Fasano elected the Madonna di Pozzo Faceto as their patroness in 1784.
