Located in the center of an ideal triangle whose vertices are the cities of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto, about 50 km away from Fasano, the city marks the border between Salento and the Land of Bari. Its territory includes various hamlets, extending for 15 km on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and entering the Itria Valley. The municipality, together with the nearby Cisternino, was aggregated to the new province in 1927; in 1955 a bill was presented to the Chamber by the deputy Maria Chieco Bianchi to bring the city back to the Bari area.
