The tower was part of a larger defensive system that included several buildings, of which only three remain today: the Aurora tower, the bell tower of the church of San Giovanni Battista and the tower near the Giant. Probably built in the 16th century by the Genoese on a previous tower to defend Monterosso from pirate raids, today it is part lounge bar and restaurant in a private house.

Torre Aurora, or Dawn Tower, dates back to the 16th century. The medieval tower is the only remaining tower of 13 built to protect Monterosso from invaders and pirates. Locals refer to the tower as “Torre al Picco di Mare,” the tower at the top of the sea.

Torre Aurora separates the old village and the new parts of Monterosso, so you can explore the area by visiting either the newer Fegina to the north or the old town of Monterosso Vecchio to the south. Today, Torre Aurora is privately owned and not open to the public, but the tower makes for a great photo opportunity.

Take a walk around the headland for the best views of Torre Aurora. Be sure to avoid the tunnel shortcut from the beach to see the tower.
