A stranding that caused a stir and brought prosperity...

The warship "Alexander Nevsky" ran aground and sank on September 25, 1868.

The remains of the Russian warship "Alexander Nevsky", which sank in 1868, lie at this point in about 10-11 m water depth. 5 men died, but 719 men were saved, including the tsar's son, Grand Duke Alexei. The ship was built and furnished from the best materials and therefore very valuable.

It was on the journey from Piraeus in Greece to St. Petersburg in Russia.
The survivors were transported home on the Danish frigate Jutland.

The subsequent salvage work resulted in a wave of prosperity throughout the parish that lasted for several years. From 1869 to 1910 a diving company recovered valuable material from the wreck.

Today the wreck lies in the sea as a 4 m high, long wall of wreckage. They consist of large wooden frames with bronze nails, a series of boiler bases with their hearths, and quantities of steel, cannonballs, and the like. The whole is
still an impressive sight for divers visiting this wreck.
