There is a great gravel path along the connecting canal from the Mittelland Canal to the Elbe. You can watch the ships and there are plenty of benches where you can take a rest.

The Elbe Lateral Canal was built west of the Elbe from 1968 to 1976 in a south-north direction. It is important for connecting the northern German ports, especially the seaport of Hamburg, to the inland waterway network.

The ships travel from the Elbe near Lauenburg via the Elbe Lateral Canal to the Mittelland Canal near Wolfsburg and from there further east to Magdeburg.

The stretch of the Elbe between Lauenburg and Magdeburg, which runs first southeast and then southwest, is 33 km longer than the canal stretch and is often only navigable to a limited extent due to persistent low water levels.

The Elbe Lateral Canal is therefore the better alternative in terms of navigation and economy.
