The area around Wackersdorf has been shaped by mining for decades. By 1982, huge bucket wheel excavators had extracted around 185 million tons of brown coal in the region. Today the region is a leisure spot and economic engine, but various facilities, display boards and exhibits remind us of the mining era of the past. In this area there are various display boards from the museum educational trail, and there are also various mining exhibits here. The exhibition ranges from excavator buckets to trucks and turbines to two wagons of a train. Very interesting.

Interesting circular route near Wackersdorf in the Upper Palatinate - The Wackersdorf museum educational trail connects the local history and industry museum there with the lignite and local history museum in Steinberg am See. The 4.8 km long educational trail runs through former, now recultivated mining areas. The Wackersdorf brown coal Geotop 99 is also on the hiking trail. Display boards provide information about the mining history from the origins of coal to today's lake landscape; new, future-oriented energy technologies as well as natural history and cultural history topics are also discussed.
