Mikael Agricola is Finland's most important reformer. He was born around 1509 as Mikael Olavinpoika (son of Olavi) in Pernaja. His father, a farmer, sent Agricola to the Latin school in Viipuri (Viborg), where he came into contact with the ideas of humanism and the Reformation while still a student. After his ordination in 1528, he became secretary to the Bishop of Turku.
Between 1536 and 1539 he studied at Wittenberg University and lived in Luther's house. Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon and Johannes Bugenhagen were among his teachers there. During this time he began to call himself Agricola, derived from the Latin word for farmer. He returned to Turku, strongly influenced by the ideas of the German reformers.
