The wonderful old oak was drawn into passion by the storm Ignatz. At least she's still standing. ☺️You shouldn't actually go up to the tree unless you dare to read the interesting sign with the explanations.

      The Roßfeld Holm Oak

The life of this old oak began around 1000 AD, making it one of the oldest holm oaks in Germany. It grew slowly under extremely adverse conditions on eruptive basalt, on limestone, sedimentary and depositional rock from the Ice Age.

The former Federal President Carstens supported the restoration of the old holm oak. Now we can be happy that it is back in full leaf in the windswept mountain depression, the gateway to the Grabfeldgau, in the foothills of the Thuringian Mountains, in the nearby area of the Long Mountains, the Kleiner and Großer Gleichberg.

In 1525, lightning struck it during a terrible thunderstorm.

It stands on the old long-distance trade route that in the early Middle Ages led from Erfurt as a fixed connection between residential castles to southern Europe. It was called the woad, salt and amber route because the woad plant, as a green and blue dye, was the basis of Thuringia's wealth at the time and was exported via this trade route to all parts of the then known world.
