The holm oak stands almost 2 km west of Roßfeld next to the road from Roßfeld to the Thuringian Straufhain.
The Thuringian border is 300 m west of the oak tree.
The oak stands free and exposed on the old long-distance trade route that led from Erfurt to southern countries.
It is called holm oak.
She happily refers to paths to old trees as holm oaks.
It is also recorded with this name on topographic maps.
On the information board on site it is described as one of the oldest holm oaks in Germany.
However, it is not the holm oak tree (Quercus ilex), which is only partially hardy in Germany, but rather a common oak.
The responsible authority in Upper Franconia also confirmed this upon request.
It is known in the region as a holm oak.
It is a proper name for the oak tree.
It is said to be 1,000 years old.
But I think she is significantly younger.
According to Fröhlich, lightning struck the oak tree in 1525.
The monumental trunk is hollow, but has only small openings.
The trunk goes vertically upwards for several meters to merge into the crown.
The crown is formed from a few strong branches and many smaller branches.
Most of the stronger branches have been shortened somewhat.
In October 2021, a strong branch that formed almost half the crown broke off. The crown has been severely damaged and reduced as a result.(Source: monumentale-eichen.de)
