The northernmost church in the Netherlands is the Sint Egbert chapel on Schiermonnikoog. Located on the Badweg, a beacon of peace and reflection. The small Roman Catholic community of Schiermonnikoog does everything they can to maintain the chapel for the guests of the island.

In 1915, the Roman Catholic chapel of Sint Egbert was officially inaugurated by the then Archbishop of Utrecht, Monseigneur van de Wetering. The architect, A. Th. Van Elmpt (1866–1932), was clearly inspired by shipbuilding; when you walk in and look at the ceiling you will know why.

At the beginning of the last century, the childless couple Reinhart-Balvert worked hard to build a Roman Catholic chapel on the island. At that time the island was owned by Count von Bernstorff. The Countess was Roman Catholic and donated a piece of land so that the chapel could be built.

For years this was the chapel where the children, who stayed in the adjacent children's colony home, went to mass every day.

Yes I remember that. The bishop of Groningen came to visit when I stayed there in 1958
