The new floodplain is a project of Rijkswaterstaat, the Aa en Maas water board, the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch, Natuurmonumenten and Werkplaats de Gruyter.
A shallow trench has been dug in the floodplain along the Maas. The new channel and the natural banks of the Meuse ensure that plants, fish and other aquatic animals that naturally belong here can flourish again. This contributes to the ecological recovery of the Meuse.
Various contours of Fort Blauwe Sluis from the 19th century have been made visible again. It concerns a redoubt that was supposed to protect the then Red and Blue lock. A modern pier has been constructed in line with the fort, which offers visitors a beautiful view over the Maas. It symbolizes a cannon from which two bullets are fired.
