The viewpoint with 'musical railing' offers a panoramic view over Kristiansand.

From Baneheia you have a good overview of the entire Kristiansand area with its many small wooden houses. In 1884 a watch and lookout post was built in Baneheia. It was intended as a fire protection measure. Kristiansand had been hit by two town fires (1859 and 1880) and the fire department in Baneheia was tasked with helping to prevent similar fires.
The firefighters sat on the lookout overlooking the entire city and harbor. They looked around the city through binoculars and if they spotted a fire during the day they would raise a red flag, if the fire was burning at night they would light a red emergency lantern. There were also two bronze cannons on the post, which were fired for the city fire department to meet, one of these cannons still stands in front of the fire station today.
