The region of today's Kristiansand was probably already populated in the Stone Age. The city was officially founded in 1641 by King Kristian IV. In 1666, Kristiansand became a garrison town and 16 years later it also became a bishop's seat.
Christiansholm Fortress, built in 1672, is located on an island that is now connected to the mainland.
