The double cooling tower was built in 1907. The two cooling towers were used to supply cooling water to blast furnaces 1 and 2. The warm water flowing back from the blast furnaces was fed to the cooling plant via a pipeline and then distributed inside the plant. The water trickled over a wooden latticework into the collecting basin below. The high top of the cooling plant acted like a chimney and accelerated the cooling of the originally hot water by means of a constant draft of wind inside the system. The centrifugal pumps in the pump house brought the water back into the cooling circuit.

Double Cooling Plant – Technical Monument in the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park

The Double Cooling Plant is an impressive industrial facility in the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park and a significant relic of steel production. This facility served to cool important process components in the blast furnace plant and played a central role in the complex steel production process.

The building impresses with its striking architecture of steel and concrete, typical of the industrial culture of the Ruhr region. The two large cooling towers are not only technical masterpieces, but also imposing landmarks that today, in the disused industrial facility, have taken on new significance as cultural and tourist attractions.

Visitors can explore the Double Cooling Plant on guided tours and along well-developed trails. The combination of raw industrial design and modern landscaping makes the visit a special experience. Information panels vividly convey the history and function of the facility.

The Double Cooling Plant symbolizes the industrial transformation in the Ruhr region – from a center of steel production to a cultural landscape with diverse recreational activities. It attracts technology enthusiasts, photographers, and culture lovers who want to experience the combination of past and present.

The double cooling plant is easily accessible and is part of the extensive landscape park, which, in addition to other industrial monuments, also offers green spaces, climbing facilities, and event venues. A must-see for anyone who wants to experience the history of the Ruhr region up close.
