St. John’s Castle was built by the Spaniards between 1640 and 1644 to enhance the fortification system of Finale Ligure. The castle overlooked and protected Finalborgo, the capital of the Marquisate of Finale. St. John’s Castle was abandoned in 1707 and in 1713 it was ceded to the Genoese, who partially demolished it. In 1882 it was transformed into a women's prison and since 1960 it is owned by the Italian State, which completely restored it.
