In addition to the nine guilds, Attendorn owes its importance mainly to the wool and linen weavers. Furthermore, the city's political and ecclesiastical position as a border fortress of the Duchy of Westphalia, which belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne, against the County of Mark and as the seat of a deanery in the old Archdiocese of Cologne, brought wealth and prosperity to the city. In 1255, Attendorn was the only town in the Sauerland to join the Rhenish League of Towns. Attendorn was only an indirect member of the German Hanseatic League and was therefore represented by the city of Soest at the big Hanseatic days.
