The oldest house in Paris is located in the Marais: the house of Nicolas Flamel. Built in 1407, this inn long served as a refuge for the poor and deprived, whom the famous alchemist (he supposedly discovered the secret of turning lead into gold) would accommodate in exchange for a few prayers. Now a traditional bistro, its pediment bears witness to the rich history of this house. For a long time, the house at 3 rue Volta was considered the oldest in Paris, until this one stole the spotlight.
