Construction began in 1791, partly due to an increase in population, but it was not finished until 1821 due to the Napoleonic Wars.
It is a neoclassical-baroque type church, and during the Civil War it lost all the old altarpieces and images, with the exception of a Gothic image of Santa Maria.
