The Maltese-shaped cross made of limestone is a so-called “atonement cross”. It represents a relic of the medieval legal system with its peculiar private justice system, which is quite alien to us today. Such historical stone crosses are still quite common, especially in the Harz foothills.

Crosses of atonement were once placed in places where a person had died violently. The stone cross near Sülzhayn is reminiscent of a monk from the nearby Cistercian monastery in Walkenried. He had sold his goods in the surrounding markets and was robbed and killed on his way home. The perpetrator was identified and had to erect this cross, among other things, to make amends for his cruel act.

The exact age of the cross cannot be dated precisely due to a lack of surviving traditions. Although the year 1774 was incorporated into the stone cross on one side, this number obviously does not represent the year the stone was set. There was a more or less long transition period from medieval law to modern jurisprudence, depending on the region, but this era also existed in the Harz region By the late 18th century it was already a thing of the past. The Sülzhayner Atonement Cross is therefore probably at least two centuries older than the subsequently added inscription would have us believe.
