The baroque splendor of this crypt is one of the religious and architectural treasures of southern Italy. The bones of the Apostle Matthew were brought to Salerno in 954, but this impressive crypt was built in the first half of the 17th century when the kings of Spain, Philip II and Philip III, decided to show their devotion to this saint by opening the crypt re-decorated in a lavish Baroque style: with marble inlays, frescoes and a bronze statue of St. Matthew by Michelangelo Naccarino, the same artist who designed the statue of St. Andrew in Amalfi Cathedral.
