The Kärnan fortress guarded Helsingborg for almost 700 years and has become a symbol of the city. A spiral staircase leads up to the top, from where you have a great view over the city and Denmark. Kärnan is 34 meters high and the walls are 4.5 meters thick. The tower is the only remnant of the ancient fortifications that have existed here since the Middle Ages. The terrace staircase connecting Kärnan with Stortorget Square below was inaugurated in 1903.helsingborg-helsingor.com/deutsch/frameset/index.html?/deutsch/sights/helsingborg.html&main
