Built in 1880 by some representatives of the local bourgeoisie, the Calderón theater more than responded to the representation needs of this social class, in full swing in the last third of the 19th century, thanks to the benefits generated by the revitalization of sugarcane agriculture. . On the outside, it was not conceived as an emblematic building for the city, but was given the distinct character of a private civil building perfectly integrated into the square and the surrounding historic buildings.
