The monument on Lekdijk Oost reminds the residents of Jaarsveld (municipality of Lopik) of the British Halifax bomber (BB 375 EQ-T), which was shot in the night of 20 to 21 June 1943 and crashed in the Lek near Jaarsveld.
The bomber with seven crew members on board belonged to the 408th Goose Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Five of the seven Canadians died in the crash.
The names of the five victims are:
2nd Lt. Clifford Clarence Reichert (pilot), 2nd Lt. John Peter Dockerill (telegraphist/gunner), 2nd Lt. Gordon Mitchell McLean (flight engineer), 2nd Lt. Joseph Earl Monohan (bomb aimer) and 2nd Lt. William Searle (gunner).
Two occupants survived the accident: 2nd Lt. George Iric Pridham (telegrapher/gunner) and 2nd Lt. James Coyle Brown Russell (navigator).
