The nature reserve is a habitat and retreat for many endangered plants and animals.

Among other things, the sand grass carnation, the heather carnation, the sand thyme, the silver grass, the mountain sanddrop[3] and the early hair grass[4] occur. A special feature is the occurrence of Austrian mugwort, which is said to have been planted by Croatian soldiers as a wine spice during the Thirty Years' War; the Hainberg was part of the Wallenstein camp near Zirndorf in 1632.[2]

The insect fauna of the Hainberg includes sand bees, the blue-winged grasshopper[4] and the swallowtail. Among the amphibians, the Natterjack Toad and the Common Spadefoot Toad should be mentioned.[4] Rare bird species in the area include the golden oriole, the wheatear, the red-backed shrike, the whitethroat,[3] the kingfisher, the tawny pipit and the woodlark[2].

There used to be a small pond here. In the meantime, an artificial lake has been built here, which contains Canadian wild geese, frogs and other aquatic animals. It's worth checking out.

The Hainberg is also worth a visit at night - nocturnal animals and a great atmosphere in the moonlight.
