The signpost tells you that you are 3.9 kilometers from the Refugio Houthem - St. Gerlach. That is the first Refugio in the Netherlands (where pilgrims can stay) and it is located right next to the Sint Gerlachuskerk and the shrine of Gerlachus.

The chapel was built in 1954 and consecrated on July 4th of that year by Mgr. Bruls. The reason for its construction was the fact that the sacramental procession passed by every three years, and an altar of repose had to be built each time. The plans for the chapel were drawn up by architect Kemps* of Heerlen.
