Be aware that parts of this towpath are very narrow with poor riding surface very close to the canal edge. Maintenance of the hedges and vegetation is currently (2018) a bit sketchy so be extra careful when riding this route or you will get a little wet.

It can be busy on the canal from Boughton through to Chester University Campus. Take it very easy and watch out for the surface on the older bridges which can contain raised brick ridges installed to give the bargees purchase when manhandling horse-drawn boats through. Once clear of the city there are some quite fast sections - but again take care on bridges where there are often pedestrian access points - slow down. Another thing to look out for is anglers rods/ poles which they might slide back across the tow path unexpectedly. A bell is a really useful accessory!
