At almost 485 m, the Totenstein is the highest elevation in the Rabenstein Forest. The rocks on the Totenstein essentially consist of mica slate, sometimes also sheaf slate. The ridge forms the southern border of the Saxon low mountain range or granulite mountain range. Together with these mountains, it was created from the clay deposits of the ancient sea through large-scale mountain and fold formation, probably over 325 million years ago. When the former much higher mountains were subsequently eroded by water, wind and weather, the mica-slate rocks, which weathered much more heavily than the feldspar-rich granulite north of the Totenstein, remained in their present form.
