Tips

  • Where seals grow big and strong
The seal station National Park House is an efficient, recognized care station for marine mammals. Between 80 and 150 orphaned harbor seals and a few gray seals are raised and brought back to the North Sea every year. The station is responsible for the entire Lower Saxony Wadden Sea, which enjoys special protection as a national park, biosphere reserve and natural world heritage site.
From feeding to the fascinating swimming skills, you can experience the species-appropriate rearing of the small marine mammals. Explanations of their biology and behavior will give you an impression of the animals, which can be deepened in informative and child-friendly adventure exhibitions all about the Wadden Sea habitat. The main task of the seal station is the rehabilitation and rearing of orphaned young animals, which are initially cared for in their own quarantine station in the Whale Museum. More than 70 volunteers, mostly Wadden Forest wardens, support the station's work. Animal keepers, federal voluntary service workers and around 20 interns a year care for the animals that are found helpless. Constant veterinary care is guaranteed.
