When visiting this site it is hard not to put yourself in the sandals of a Roman soldier occupying this fortlet. Can you imagine how he felt back then, in the first century AD, on the farthest frontier of the Roman world, looking out over Bristol Bay to the wilds of Wales to the north? When I visited the fortlet in 2001, the nearby County Gate Car Park, located on the A39, had a tourist office where I read that this fortlet was very similar in size and design to Roman fortlets elsewhere on the borders of the Roman frontier. I believe that the tourist office has since been closed down. The Historic Environment Record for Exmoor National Park website has excellent information provided by the archaeological excavations of the fort. An historical site of Roman fort ruins. Today they are little more than mounds in grassland, but the design can be clearly made out. When visiting, it is clear why there was a fort there with commanding views or the surrounding countryside.
