It's thought that the first weir here was built in the 10th century by the local monks. The flow was diverted in the 17th century and then brought back to its current location towards the end of the 18th century – this is the basis of the lock you see today.
Occupying a rather picturesque spot, you can sometimes see canal boats navigating the canal here. You can follow the waterway on footpaths in either direction.
