The border between West Berlin and the GDR used to run through the middle of the lake. It was marked by buoys. West Berliners were allowed to swim up to these buoys in the lake and skate on the ice in winter. Access was forbidden for GDR citizens - the Groß Glienicker See was essentially part of the wall.
