Opened in 1849, High Level Bridge at Newcastle was part of the objective to create a continuous line from London to Edinburgh. Designed by Robert Stephenson, the bridge was to combine rail and road traffic and was the first in the world to do so. It still functions as a railway bridge but nowadays road traffic has been reduced for busses only along with pedestrians.
