The Momela Lakes are a series of smaller lakes in Arusha National Park. They are located in the northeast of the park and are only partly filled with water all year round. The Momella lakes are saline. They are mainly fed by groundwater and are characterized by a high fluorine content.

The lakes were formed when a violent eruption of Mount Meru about 6000 years ago caused the east wall of the crater to collapse and a stream of water, mud and rocks spilled east into the steppe. Another collapse of the caldera, 1800 years later, changed the course of the river that fed the lakes and all the lakes except Little Momella Lake were isolated.
