Also called "the mosque of Potsdam", the steam engine house, which was built by order of Friedrich Wilhelm IV between 1841-43, is a special eye-catcher on the way to the heart of the city. When it was commissioned in 1842, the fountain in Park Sanssouci rose to a proud 38 meters. The house is only open as part of special exhibitions, but it can also be admired from the outside. The only drawback is the location on the busy Breiten Straße - but you can quickly forget the traffic on the other side of the building, with a walk or run around the Neustädter Havelbucht.

The former steam engine house for Sanssouci - also called "pump house" or "mosque" - is in Potsdam on the Neustädter Havelbucht. It was built on request of King Frederick William IV in the years 1841-1843 under the direction of Ludwig Persius to operate the Great Fountain in front of the Sanssouci Palace. It is one of the historic landmarks of civil engineering in Germany [1] and represents an outstanding example of orientalizing architecture.

The steam engine needed 4 tons of hard coal per day, with an efficiency of 3%. In the meantime, it has been replaced by an electric motor.
