Oelegem only became an independent parish in 1604, independent of Broechem, although a chapel was already built here in 1263. The church got its current neo-Gothic appearance during the reconstruction after World War I. Architect Frans Sel chose to give the spire back its typical shape, from 1670. In the interior, some beautiful wooden statues from the 16th and 18th centuries were spared from the war. The decoration of the choir in pure neo-Gothic style, a gift from the de Brouchoven de Bergeyck family, deserves special attention.
