A small river that has two to five names flows through the Walchental on the German-Austrian border. In Germany the river is called Walchen and in Austria Seeache (or Ache, Achen or Achenbach).
The course of the river in the northern half of the Achental wraps around the north-east corner of the Karwendel Mountains and thus separates it from the Mangfall Mountains. As the Seeache, it is the natural outflow of the Achensee. It leaves the lake at the northern end and drains the northern Achental near Achenkirch. However, since the construction of the Achensee power plant in the Inn Valley, a large part of the Achensee water has flowed into the Inn. Near the Kaiserwacht at the Achenpass, the river turns increasingly to the west. As Walchen it reaches the Isar through the Walchenklamm. The natural estuary has sunk into the Sylvenstein reservoir since the late 1950s.
The cycle path, past the small river, is very nice to ride and is always fun.
